Viridor reaches Financial Close on Thameside Energy Recovery Facility at Tilbury Docks
Viridor announces it has reached financial close on the Thameside Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at Tilbury Docks (Port of Tilbury). This milestone marks the next step in the development of Viridor’s latest Energy from Waste (EfW) facility, increasing its fleet to 12 state-of-the-art ERFs across the UK.
With planning consent already secured from the Government, construction of the Thameside ERF will commence later this month. Once operational, the facility will process up to 350,000 tonnes of residual black bag waste annually, generating renewable energy sufficient to power the equivalent of 93,000 homes.
“We are delighted that Thameside ERF has reached financial close and will join the growing Viridor ERF fleet, underpinning our continued ambition to invest in our sustainable energy business,” said Leon Brackstone, Project Lead and Senior Development Manager at Viridor.
Patrick Daws, Head of ERF Projects adds, “We are proud to begin construction on the Thameside ERF, an exciting new project that will play a vital role in reducing landfill waste and producing renewable energy, while also being a responsible neighbour to the Tilbury community.”
Construction is expected to begin later this month, with Kanadevia Inova (formerly Hitachi Zosen Inova) as the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor on the project. Kanadevia Inova is a global leader in waste-to-energy technologies and will be responsible for building out the new ERF. Viridor and Kanadevia Inova have a strong relationship, having worked together on a number of previous projects including the recently commissioned Westfield ERF in Fife, Scotland.
"We are thrilled to be a part of the Thameside Energy Recovery Facility project, partnering with Viridor to deliver this vital modern waste treatment infrastructure," said Fabio Dinale, Executive VP of Business Development at Kanadevia Inova. “This project exemplifies our shared commitment to sustainable development by moving more non-recyclable waste away from landfill and avoiding harmful methane emissions. We look forward to bringing our expertise to this project and working closely with Viridor and the Tilbury community to ensure its success."
Viridor is committed to fostering strong community relationships through the Tilbury Liaison Committee (TLC), which provides residents with a platform to stay informed and share input. Regular updates on the Thameside ERF project will be shared through newsletters and on the Viridor website. The company plans to extend its We Share community fund to support initiatives and projects that matter most to local residents in the Tilbury area.
